On Friday March 12 2010, I travelled to Austin TX for the 2010 SXSW Interactive Conference.

Along with Wesley Hodgson of somnambulant.net, we talked Cycling (Wesley) and Strength Training (Me) with a group of conference participants. Here I talk a bit about working out when away from home.

Introducing The Kettlebell!

Join the thousands of people from all walks of life who have vastly improved their fitness and reached previously unattained goals through kettlebell training!

This 90-minute workshop will teach you the six basic kettlebell exercises and introduce you to the concepts of the Hardstyle kettlebell training system.

Even if you never touch a kettlebell again, you will still learn how to maximize the safety, intensity and results of your existing workout.

Fundamental Hardstyle moves:

The Swing

The powerful full-body foundation of the ballistic kettlebell lifts (swing, snatch, clean), the Swing teaches you safe, correct and efficient lower-body power generation while forging a powerful injury-resistant back, lean and toned legs & glutes and a grip of iron. Take your deadlift to new heights by learning how to really access your hip-power. Recover from pulling workouts more quickly AND burn more fat via weight-bearing ballistic exercise. You won't want to use the treadmill anymore!

The Clean

Take the kettlebell from the floor to the shoulder with the Clean. Learn how to safely and correctly lift weight to your shoulders, using your whole body. Improve any weightlifting exercise by learning to use Cleans as a muscle and central nervous system power-booster.

The Front Squat

A powerful lower-body strength and conditioning builder, the Front Squat will give you strong and tireless legs. Learn how the Front Squat can improve the flexibility and health of your back, while at the same time improving all of your other squat variations.

The Turkish Getup

The full-body foundation of the grind lifts (Press, Row, Pullup), the TGU will give you bulletproof shoulders and increase your all-over strength.

The Side Press

Safely lifting heavy weight overhead while standing will give you the arm, back and abdominal strength/tone you have always wished for. Get leaner and stronger by Side Pressing more weight, more often and safely!

The Snatch

Often called the Tsar of kettlebell lifts, the Snatch will give you tremendous cardiovascular conditioning while at the same time burning more fat than treadmills, ellipticals or stationary bicycles. The culmination of the Swing and the Getup, the Snatch takes you to new levels of full-body power, coordination and stamina! Don't believe me? Come and try the 5-minute Snatch Test...

Al Heinemann - Trainer, a recent attendee at an Intro Workshop says:

I just spent an afternoon with Steve McMinn, taking his introduction to kettlebells workshop. I am a trainer myself who recently acquired a couple of kettlebells and I had been studying Pavel's books and watching kettlebell videos and reading articles on the internet. I am someone who spends a lot of time studying and trying to learn everything I can about a number of training modalities.

First of all, let me say that Steve is a really disarming, approachable guy. More importantly though, Steve is very knowlegeable, precise and skilled. Most importantly, he is a very good teacher.

Some trainers have one or two of these qualities. When you find someone with all three then consider yourself lucky and take the opportunity to learn!
